Adult Content?

A third warning, as if two weren’t enough. There’s some pretty abrasive language from the outset that lingers towards the end. It gets funny.

God damn cock sucking commie motherfucker. Eat a dick, thunder cunt. Bitch tits labia. Fucking asshole, dick swallowing twat waffle. Whore, slut, anal leakage.

If I go any further, I’m going to laugh.

Obviously that was some pretty harsh language, but does that make it adult language? Absolutely fucking not, the amount of profanity within those … one sentence and three sentence fragments – ruined any sort of cohesion between thought and words. Honestly, sentences (and fragments) like those are pretty damn childish: I learned every almost every a number of those words when I was a child and was using most some of them by middle school. Granted, I had older siblings in high school by then but that doesn’t mean all that much (I know a kid who’s said “shit” under his breath at least thrice, he’s nine.) Excessive profanity is not adult content, you’re more likely to hear it on prime time television like every other high schooler in today’s America (as in the continent.)

So, what is adult content? Gratuitous sex? Excessive violence? Gross out humor? Once again, these things are readily accessible and even marketed towards people who are not adults. Granted, young children might find it difficult access gratuitous sexual content, but violence and gross humor can be found in almost every fucking video game parents buy for them (do your research moms and dads!)

When I think adult content, I don’t think “cunt.” Instead, I think more about the existential dread of peaking early and being trapped on a self inflicted downward spiral until hitting rock bottom: Bojack Horseman. Adult content, while fueled by sex and violence, has less to do with sex and violence and more to do with the trials that come with growing up and losing your innocence. Being driven to murder and thievery in order to feed your family is adult content. Cheating on your spouse because your trapped in a love-starved marriage, only to find out your lover is a violent sociopath is adult content. Watching everything you’ve ever loved get butchered before being butchered in turn, because of medieval politics and ruthless pragmatism, is adult content. Sure, many of these scenarios are salt and peppered with Ultra Violence (TM) and/or rampant fucking, but those take a back seat to the higher thinking elements of maturity: everyone dies in Hamlet but the story is about revenge and incest inheritance laws.

When it comes to making something “adult” you have to try harder than dropping an F-Bomb, but it has to be more than “guy does taxes.” Try this: a struggling inventory clerk turns to insurance fraud in order to make ends meet and gets tangled up in Mafia/gang affairs, going down an inescapable path that can only lead to tragedy. The tragedy doesn’t have to be death of any kind, use your imagination.

One more for the road: fuck.
